I came across the legend of Janas during a research trip in Sardinia, an island where textile tradition is deeply rooted in history.
The Janas were once bees transformed by a “distracted God” in fairy-like proto-female creatures, industrious workers at their golden looms, depositaries of the Textile Know-How.
And there’s no Sardinian woman’s work without chant, here mixing with the loom beating and the bees buzzing: the Janas supervising the making of the textile artefact.

Durante un recente viaggio di ricerca tessile in Sardegna ho scoperto la leggenda delle Janas ripresa anche da Maria Lai e Giuseppe Dessì.
Le Janas erano api che un Dio distratto trasformò in creature fatate protofemminili, alacri lavoratrici al telaio d'oro e depositarie di tutto il Saper Fare che trasmetteranno alle donne una volta che queste giungeranno sull'Isola.
E non c'è lavoro femminile senza il canto, che qui si mescola al battito del telaio e al ronzio delle Janas che supervisionano l'esecuzione del manufatto tessile.
